Ethanol
The production of ethanol from sugar in Europe dates back to the early 19th Century. The first molasses distilleries originated in the second half of the 19th Century in Northern Germany, which included KWST. The fermentation of alcohol was developed over thousands of years, and today is an existential element of industrial production in many sectors.
For the production of bioethanol as a fuel additive, there is generally only very limited concentration and purification. The latter is essentially aimed at reducing the water content.
In the field of food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry very pure neutral alcohol is in high demand, as it is produced in complex multi-step rectifications and through the use of water (hydroselection). This yields an alcohol that is neutral in taste, i.e. it has no undesirable foreign odor or taste.
At 97.2%vol. ethanol with water forms an azeotrope and cannot be further concentrated by distillation. Using the so-called entrainer distillation, we remove the remaining water. The same effect is achieved by drying using a molecular sieve.

For KWST, protecting the environment and natural resources is a top priority. This is why KWST only uses renewable sources of raw materials. A particularly energy-saving and resource-conserving manufacturing process, along with the generation of energy from waste wood and logistics geared towards CO2 savings, complement our philosophy.
For organically produced products in the spirits, food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and personal care sector, KWST offers grain alcohol from controlled organic cultivation from European production.
Organic ethanol is a high-purity neutral alcohol which meets the requirements of the ecological EU guidelines and is certified according to the EC-Eco-Regulation No. 834/2007. This excludes the use of chemical pesticides, mineral fertilizers or genetically modified organisms in the production chain.
You can purchase our organic ethanol in the usual containers (barrel, IBC or tank truck). Should you have any further questions, our team will be happy to assist you.

Alcohol, especially ethyl alcohol, is widely used as an active ingredient in products for skin and surface disinfection due to its excellent disinfecting and germicidal effect.
Since 1 September 2013, the new Biocide Regulation (EU) No. 528/2012 has been in force, replacing the previous Directive 98/8 EC. According to the Regulation, the active substances of a biocidal product must be listed in the so-called active substance list according to Article 95. The manufacturing and marketing companies receive the approval of an active substance by submitting a dossier to the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency).
After successful submission of the dossiers with ethanol (EC No. 200-578-6, CAS: 64-17-5) KWST is included in the list according to Article 95 and thus continues to be authorised to market the active substance ethanol as a biocide for the product categories PT1, PT2 and PT 4 of the main group 1 “disinfectants”.
Main group 1: Disinfectants
Product categories PT1 Human hygiene: The products of this product type are biocidal products used for human hygiene and applied to or in contact with the human skin or scalp mainly for the purpose of skin or scalp disinfection).
Product category PT2 disinfectants and algae control products: These products are not intended for direct application to humans or animals. Products for the disinfection of surfaces, substances, equipment and furniture not intended for direct contact with food or feed. […] Products used as an additive in textiles, fabrics, masks, paints and other objects or substances to produce treated goods with disinfecting properties.
Product Category PT4 Food and Feed Sector: Products used for the disinfection of equipment, containers, cutlery and dishes, surfaces and pipes used in connection with the production, transport, storage or consumption of food or feed (including drinking water) for humans and animals.
